France Calls For International Nuclear Response Team
The French PM called for an international nuclear crisis training center and ways to cooperate on safety and standards. He also called for an international crisis team. In light of all the time and negotiating it took just to get needed equipment like pumping cranes and robots, this is an overdue idea. We previously mentioned a Chernobyl survivors group who is asking for the same changes.
From the Bloomberg article:
“Fillon today called for “convergence” on safety standards around the world through structures such as the crisis management mechanism, which could be overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency. “After Fukushima we have to reconsider every way we manage crisis,” he said. “Governments must protect their populations.””
Hindsight is always 20/20. An international ready team is a good idea as is more international cooperation. An emergency response team could have had needed equipment onsite within days rather than weeks. This will also require countries to be willing to accept outside help and to be honest about the extent of any nuclear crisis on their soil.
