Japan To Freeze Fast Breeder Reactor Program

The science ministry plans to freeze the budget of Monju, Japan’s fast breeder reactor program by slashing it up to 80%. This would only leave enough funding to maintain the plant. The uncertainty of Japan’s nuclear plans were cited as a concern with the project. Monju has been plagued with problems. It has only run for an hour since its first testing twenty years ago. It suffered a liquid sodium leak that caused a fire back in 1995 along with a cover up. In 2010 it was restarted only to have a piece of equipment become lodged at an angle inside the reactor. Monju runs on MOX fuel and the liquid sodium coolant adds an additional risk due to its inherent dangers
