Officials in Tochigi Prefecture used school children in a PR stunt to promote local beef. Beef in the region had tested over the limit for cesium and shipments were banned for 3 weeks in August. Local beef was served to school children, the media and local farmers were invited to the event. At the same time beef in the area is being labeled as “below government limit”, this designation does not say if the beef had no cesium detected or if it was just below the 500 bq/kg.
In a house budget meeting a representative relayed a story about a mother in Fukushima whose children, and others who refuse to drink milk in school lunches were called to the front of the classroom by their teacher and told they were not Fukushima residents if they dared refuse drinking milk from Fukushima.
A group of children in Fukushima have shown with signs of thyroid function changes. 10 out of 130 children tested showed some sign of thyroid changes. The doctor involved wasn’t sure yet if the group is directly connected to radiation exposure, more monitoring will continue with the children.
