UPDATE: Fire At Fukushima Likely Hydrogen Purge
We have been following the mysterious “fire” at Fukushima Daiichi for over 4 hours now. The fire has not changed and per previous speculation we assumed it may be burning off hydrogen. The color and lack of significant smoke made this possible. TEPCO has also been increasingly trying new tactics to battle hydrogen in the reactors. NHK reported this morning of new nitrogen injection and specifically mentions the extraction of hydrogen at unit 2 as part of this new action.
Winds at Fukushima have decreased from 6-10 m/s down to 3-6 m/s in the last hour.
Since the winds changed the visual on TBS has slowed to a pulsating glow.
If TEPCO has chosen to burn off hydrogen to avert an explosion it raises a couple of questions about why this is still such a difficult issue and also why no one was informed prior to their attempting this.
As we find our more we will add updates. If you have news on this issue please share over at the Scribble Live Blog
