Plastic Hoses At Fukushima Damaged By Cold Weather

As winter set in concerns about all the hoses draped on the ground at Fukushima Daiichi were discussed at our live blog. The hoses don’t seem to be freezing up but the cold is certainly causing damage to the plastic hoses. Worker reports at Sankei Shimbun have said the hoses may have been degraded by the months of intense sunlight over the summer and the cold is making them brittle and prone to leaks and cracks. There has been an ongoing list of minor hose leaks at the plant since the weather turned cold. TEPCO has not announced any plans to upgrade the network of plastic hoses used to cool the reactors and move water around the plant complex.
