New Seismic Faults Found, Another Plant May Be Doomed

The Higishidori nuclear plant was inspected for active seismic faults this week. Five experts from the Japan NRA inspected the F3 fault that runs north-south through the plant.

Shimazaki said a shift in a different fault under the compound may be related to an active fault.

There was no immediate consensus of the experts. The plant owner claims the fault is not active but was showing “water swelling”. The NRA is expecting to have a decision on Higishidori late next week.

The Tsuruga nuclear plant inspected earlier was found to have an active fault running directly under the #2 reactor at the plant. #2 is the newer of the two units. The seismic experts looking at the plant faults seems in consensus that the Tsuruga fault is active and the plant should not restart.

Meanwhile PM Noda wants the Tsuruga plant owner to decide to voluntarily decommission the plant.
