Economy Minister Defers To NRA On Reactor Restarts

The new head of METI appointed by the LDP government made this statement about reactor restarts in Japan.

Economy Minister Toshimitsu Motegi made this statement about restarts, this also will tie into energy policy:

“We will rely on the NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority) to judge safety from an expert point of view and will not restart ones as long as safety is not confirmed,”

Minister Motegi also made this statement that seems to be a considerable change considering the LDP ran on the platform of restarting reactors. “We have not decided on the policy of going zero-nuclear by the 2030s,”

The LDP government wants a 3 year time table to review the safety of all 3 reactor but the NRA says this is impossible to meet. Even the few plants the NRA has been reviewing for active faults has been a very long process.
