French Nuclear Institute Shows Disaster Would Devastate Country
A study by the French nuclear safety agency IRSN showed a single INES 7 nuclear disaster would be a major blow to the country. It would cost about $580 billion or 20% of national economic output.
They estimated about 100,000 people would be left homeless, crops and the environment in the region would be ruined. About $126 billion of the losses would be to French tourism and consumable products. The agency considered the potential losses in France to be even larger than Japan’s losses so far from Fukushima.
This recent data map shows how dangerous a nuclear disaster could be in a geographically dense country like Germany. Just looking at a 30km zone puts millions of people in danger. What was seen from the Fukushima disaster is that people are exposed and the environment contaminated far beyond the evacuation zones.
