Monju Fast Breeder Nuclear Reactor Skipped Critical Safety Checks

Earlier it was reported that Monju staff had put off 9,847 safety checks. Now they have admitted to regulators that they did not do two critical inspections of equipment that they reported as being completed.

The two checks were testing of emergency diesel generators needed to keep the plant safety systems operating if they were to lose power and flow meters for the sodium cooling system. Regulators will now be doing on site inspections of the plant.

Monju has a long history of cover ups and problems. A refueling rig became precariously jammed in the reactor causing concern how they would safely remove the equipment. Earlier the reactor had a sodium fire that caused extensive damage at the plant. Operators tried to edit video of the incident to cover up the extent of the problem.
