Turbine Hall Section Collapses At Chernobyl
A section of the turbine hall building at Chernobyl collapsed Tuesday under heavy snows. The pink section on this image shows where the failure happened. This is outside of the reactor building itself where the highest levels of radiation exist. Officials claim there was no increase in radiation levels after the collapse.
We checked Russian and European radiation networks nearby and did not find any elevated radiation levels as of Wednesday afternoon. The collapsed section is 50 meters away from the sarcophagus surrounding the reactor building. While officials were quick to assure the public there was no risk to the main reactor building they made no statement about the stability of the rest of the turbine hall building.
Work is currently in progress to put a giant steel arched barn over the reactor building due to concerns of the reactor building and sarcophagus collapsing.
