Power Out At Fukushima Daiichi

Update: NHK reports that spent fuel pool cooling, common pool cooling, water treatment system, and the isolation building are without power. They cite a problem with the high voltage cable to the distribution panel as the source of the outage.

Update: Kyodo News reports only the spent fuel pool cooling systems are out. We are working on more confirmation of the status at the plant  Estimates from our research puts the unit 4 spent fuel pool at a heat up rate of .19c/hour. So there is considerable leeway to get cooling back online.

Power is out at Fukushima Daiichi.. The power to the cooling systems, common pool and spent fuel pools has gone out. The site is otherwise receiving power to the spot lights and web camera. Fukushima Diary reports the isolation building has also lost power.

Oita Press confirms the plant has power going to the site but not to certain equipment. It appears to be something in the power distribution system at the plant.

TEPCO was working on the redundant power supply for the unit 2 spent fuel pool in the morning. It is not clear if the two issues are related or not:
※ 35 minutes at 6:00 am on March 18, with the redundant power supply works, stop the alternative cooling system of Unit 2 spent fuel pool (pool water temperature shutdown: 15.0 ℃ approximately). In addition, in the 0.19 ℃ / h, about the rate of increase pool water temperature at the time of stopping the cooling, the temperature rise of pool water is stopped, the margin for 65 ℃ limits on the operation from being evaluated as about 2.3 ℃ There is no problem on the spent fuel pool water temperature control.

Fukushima Diary cites a Facebook source who claims to be posting a TEPCO press alert, we have not been able to independently verify this as a TEPCO report. It cites power going out in the afternoon of March 18th. Machine translation below:

I have to inform those who duct.

○ about 57 minutes at 6 (March 18) afternoon, important in seismic isolation building the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant today
events have the power to stop instantaneously incur.

○ After reviewing the situation, some of the power equipment of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is shut down
Down, the following equipment is down.
(Check the current status 38 minutes at 9:00 pm)

Cesium adsorption equipment water treatment equipment (Kyurion)
(Secondary system) ※ alternative cooling equipment Unit 1 spent fuel pool
Alternative cooling equipment, Unit 3 spent fuel pool (one system and secondary)
Alternative cooling equipment and Unit 4 spent fuel pool (one system and secondary)

※ For the primary system of the alternative cooling equipment Unit 1 spent fuel pool, pump of the same strain
10:09 pm minute, stop manually in order to protect the group.

○ In addition, the following facilities and equipment for the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, confirm that there are no errors
We.
