More leaks. ALPS A system sprung yet another tank leak. The separate desalination system that has been running for about the last year sprung a 350 liter leak this week.

Reactors in Japan that are being expected to file for restarts include a group of pressurized water reactors. All are newer builds and all are located in western Japan. There is an assumption that they have the more likely chance of passing the government screenings. Many of the safety standards for boiling water reactors are being deferred for pressurized water reactors.

Cheap natural gas seems to be killing the plan by Japan’s PM to export nuclear power to other countries. A number who had been considering building new reactors are changing their minds as cheaper natural gas is being selected as a better option. The nuclear export plan was a large part of the current administration’s plan for the Japanese economy.

The US NRC head may not receive a re-appointment to her position due to obstructing the promised release of documents related to the engineering problems at the San Onofre nuclear plant.

Another Nebraska nuclear plant is under scrutiny for having sub standard staff conduct. The Cooper nuclear plant received a warning from the NRC. This plant is run by Entergy. The Ft. Calhoun nuclear plant received a similar warning then turned to Exelon to supposedly solve their staff deficiences. The plan to use energy contract companies to operate old nuclear plants may not do anything to improve staff competency.

CAISO, the authority that oversees California’s energy needs released a report showing that with San Onofre nuclear plant shut down permanently, the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant would not be required or needed to keep power supplies stable.
