Update On Strontium 90 Leaks At Fukushima Daiichi

TEPCO released more information about the strontium 90 leak at a press conference today. They have known about the strontium 90 in the groundwater near the turbine buildings since at least May 2013 but didn’t tell anyone including the NRA til now. The levels of strontium 90 in the harbor have been known and elevated consistently since 2011.

Levels found in the areas around the turbine buildings and canals were also drastically higher in certain types of radiation near unit 1. Tritium, ruthenium and strontium were all higher with varied increases over time from 2012 to now. TEPCO admitted in statements buried in other admissions that the contaminated water in the tunnels is a major concern. They intend to empty and concrete these tunnels and also to dump concrete grout into the torus room of unit 1 before melted fuel would be removed from the room.
