NRA To Add Outside Experts At Fukushima As Disaster Spirals Further Out Of Control

NRA announced an increased role at Fukushima Daiichi.
The authority said that it will set up a group of geologists to collect data to gauge the extent of the diffusion of radiation in the water and soil while continuing to leave planning and implementation of appropriate counter measures to the plant’s operator,”
The chairman of the NRA earlier confirmed the idea that the NRA would be doing more:
““It is simply too big for one company to handle,” Mr. Tanaka said last Wednesday, and suggested government’s intervention.”

A TEPCO representative made this statement:

We are very grateful for the help. We will show the whole picture to the public as soon as possible by working together with them,”

The article went on to advocate for ignoring decommissioning of the reactors in order to focus on the contaminated water issue. TEPCO has yet to identify the location of the melted fuel, something that would have a direct impact on the contaminated water problem and leaks to the sea. TEPCO insists they don’t have a worker shortage yet can’t complete tasks due to the limited hours workers can be in the field in the summer.

TEPCO has been hinting they are keen to absolve themselves of dealing with the disaster at Fukushima Daiichi. What has not been stated is if they would continue to try to run Kashiwazaki Kariwa and Fukushima Daini if they abandoned repsonsibility for Fukushima Daiichi?
