Another US Nuclear Plant To Permanently Shut Down
Vermont Yankee will shut down permanently at the end of this fuel cycle. By the 4th quarter of 2014 the plant will begin the process of permanent shutdown.
Entergy cited market forces as playing a part in their decision to shut down their Fukushima clone BWR reactor built in the late 1960’s. Vermont Yankee began operations in 1972. Entergy bought the plant in 2002 and has been in tense fights with the state over the operation of the plant ever since. Multiple court cases were brought by the state to try to shut it down.
This follows a list of other nuclear power plants in the US that have ceased operation over financial woes. Kewaunee nuclear plant shut down this spring for the same reasons. San Onofre shut down both units after massive failures in the steam generators caused protracted outage while the problem was looked at.
