TEPCO Weird Statements, Regulator & Experts Involved Making Dire Comments On Fukushima

AizawaTepcoWe have suspected for the past few months that something more is up at Fukushima Daiichi than has been admitted for a number of reasons. Statements made today by TEPCO and those in the know with the disaster have grown fairly dire.

Fukushima Diary roughly quotes a TEPCO executive (Mr. Aizawa) as saying that there are many other risks at the plant and that they may reveal them someday. We are trying to independently verify the exact quote and context of Mr. Aizawa’s statement.

UPDATE: Yuri was kind enough to provide an in context direct translation of Mr. Aizawa’s statement to the press:

Around 23:00 in the video.

Q:  You don’t know where the leaks are, and you don’t know why the alarms are going off outside the operation center.  There are many unclear issues.  Can you tell me if there is any data that might lead to serious danger?

A:  Currently, it is the contaminated water that might lead to the most important risk and danger.  We are presently trying hard to identify risks other than that, and eventually we might reveal them.  If that happens, they will be explained in detail.  We are considering the contaminated water related issues are at most risk, so we are focusing on dealing with them.

A:  Are you saying there are other risks?

Q:  Of course there are.  There are many risks.  We are prioritizing them in dealing with them.

A:  I don’t think data should be prioritized.

Q:  We are prioritizing issues due to limitations in resources.  We are not prioritizing information.

Dale Klein, a former US NRC chair who is currently on an advisory board hired by TEPCO made these statements to the media in recent days.
the company has been “less than friendly” when urged to come up with a plan for dealing with the problem, so there is no way to know what other bad news is waiting to be revealed.”

We were disappointed that they weren’t more forthcoming” about an earlier leak, said Dale Klein, the panel’s chairman and a former head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. “They really do need to stop going from crisis to crisis and have a systematic approach to water management.”

Even more concerning is this statement from the head of Japan’s nuclear regulator who has not been someone prone to dramatic language. Shunichi Tanaka, head of the Japan NRA said this today in relation to the current problems at Daiichi. “We cannot waste even a minute,” he said. “This is what we have been fearing.”

These kinds of statements are out of character for TEPCO and for the others quoted.
