Fukushima Shift; Japan May Take On Entire Disaster Response

The current government in Japan is considering taking on the costs and responsibility of the decontamination work, contaminated soil storage, decommissioning the reactors and the contaminated water problems at the plant. This is all of the current responses to the disaster short of compensating people for their losses and relocation. The government is considering permanently closing some areas of the evacuation zone, this may then put them into the responsible role for relocation of those people.

Meanwhile TEPCO is looking to reorganize themselves in the hopes of preventing a bankruptcy process by the government. They must consider this possibility to be real enough as they are taking efforts to avoid it.

The efforts by the government were assumed to eventually take place as disaster costs grew beyond TEPCO’s ability to ever pay back. The bigger question is will TEPCO be allowed to continue and not face any consequences for their actions? This seems to be something the public would be unlikely to support.
