Taiwan Activists Want Lower Food Radiation Levels, Show Loophole In System
Activists in Taiwan are trying to further lower the allowed level of radioactive contamination in food allowed for sale in the country. The current standard is 370 bq/kg, set soon after the Chernobyl disaster. There is a push to lower it to 100 bq/kg the same as Japan’s.
The loophole pointed out is that Taiwan may already have a somewhat lower standard compared to other countries but actual testing results are not disclosed. In Hong Kong the government intervention level is much higher at 1000 bq/kg but all testing results even for foods below the 1000 bq/kg threshold are published. This allows consumers to decide for themselves and shows a level of accountability in the govt. It also allows consumers to urge the company to make better sourcing choices.
