Radiation Leak At US WIPP Nuclear Storage Facility
The Associated Press is reporting that an underground radiation monitor has gone off inside the WIPP nuclear waste storage facility in New Mexico. Officials report that they have not detected radiation above ground at the facility. They also mention that no workers have been underground to investigate. There was a fire in the underground areas of the facility 10 days ago. The AP report was ambiguous if they meant no one has been underground the entire 10 days or just not since the alarm went off.
Workers were told to seek shelter when the alarm went off, some non essential personnel have been allowed to leave. The waste stored there is contaminated with plutonium and is a considerable inhalation hazard if it were to leak from the site.
