WIPP Incident Creates Local Frustration

A town hall meeting and a meeting with New Mexico’s congressional delegation showed the level of frustration and lack of answers surrounding the incident at WIPP.

The congress members met with people from DOE including secretary Montiz and the contractors running WIPP. They expressed the same frustration the public has been voicing for weeks.

Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich, and Representative Steve Pearce urged Moniz and the DOE to provide quick information, along with the context of the data so the community can better interpret the results.

Sens. Udall and Heinrich suggested that the DOE provide daily status updates with the handling of the incident surrounding WIPP.”

The associated press reporter that covered the town hall made this comment about the public frustration.

The press didn’t give much new information out of the press conference and town hall meeting, it appeared to be mostly a repeat of the previous town hall that was full of assurances without much substance.

Probes are planned to be sent into the mine next week to determine when the re-entry crew can go in to investigate.
