Fukushima Unit 3; MSIV Shows Considerable Damage
TEPCO completed an initial inspection of the unit 3 MSIV room that houses valves critical to shutting down the reactor. The room showed considerable damage compared to the same room in unit 2. The damage indicates the room likely had high heat and large amounts of steam for an extended period of time. Water in the room appeared to be leaking from a lower location where the steam pipes are located and not from a freshwater feed pipe. TEPCO intends to do follow up inspections in the room.
IRID recently announced that the concept of filling the containment structure with water for fuel removal may not be possible. NHK reports the issues in the unit 3 MSIV room as part of a larger effort to inspect the containment structures to determine if they can be sealed or not. If IRID’s concern turns out to be the case it will force all parties to have to create new plans for dealing with the crippled plant.
