Work has begun to freeze the unit 2 trench at Fukushima Daiichi. This has been a problematic area since the initial disaster. In early 2011 the trench was found to be leaking highly radioactive water.
The effort to freeze the trench is hoped to help block water flow so the trench can be emptied. The existing highly radioactive water will eventually be pumped into the system of storage and water treatment tanks.
