Fukushima Unit 4 Fuel Removal Hits Half Way Mark
Don’t pop the champagne quite yet. Removal of spent fuel from the damaged unit 4 fuel pool has crossed the half way mark. 770 assemblies have been removed, leaving 763 to go.
The remaining ones include three known to have been damaged from before the disaster. Those will require special handling and a cask capable of transporting them.
Removal of the spent fuel from unit 4 has been an urgent situation since the early days of the disaster. It was discovered that the pool structure itself had damage as did portions of the building below. TEPCO did some patch work to try to shore it up. The pool’s quake resistance is still diminished leaving concerns of a potential structural failure.
