As of Saturday evening JST, unit 4 at Fukushima Daiichi has been emptied of all nuclear fuel. Workers had removed all of the spent nuclear fuel earlier this month that had created a severe risk at the plant. The risk from the damaged spent fuel pool had caused international criticism that eventually prompted TEPCO to fast track the removal.
The spent fuel pool had been found to have cracks and other damage in April of 2011. With all of the fuel removed the serious risk from this unit is now over. TEPCO will still have to safely remove all the radioactive steel in the building and deal with dismantling the remaining sections of the damaged structure.
The new was reported by Japan Today, TEPCO has not released a press release on the news yet.
