Japan NRA Admits Fukushima Daiichi Still Leaking Into Pacific
The head of Japan’s NRA stated that the contaminated water at Fukushima Daiichi is continuing to seep into the ground and leak out to sea.
“We must find the cause of the contamination . . . and put the highest priority on implementing countermeasures,” NRA Chairman Shunichi Tanaka told a meeting of the body’s commissioners after they had examined recent studies carried out on groundwater samples at the plant that detected high levels of cesium, tritium and other radioactive contamination.
TEPCO reiterated that the unit 2 cable trench is the source of the leak. NRA is disputing this assumption and thinks there are more pathways that the damaged nuclear plant is leaking contaminated water out to sea. In recent weeks there have been additional fluctuations in contamination in groundwater monitoring wells near the reactors and sea front areas. As TEPCO has attempted to concrete in the cable trench they found fluctuations in the access shafts for the tunnel and the new changes to contamination levels in the sea front monitoring wells were discovered.
