Oil Leak In Fukushima Daiichi Unit 3 Spent Fuel Pool
An oil leak occurred in the spent fuel pool of unit 3 at Fukushima Daiichi today as work was under way to remove parts of the fuel handling machine. The fuel crane fell into the spent fuel pool during the massive explosion at unit 3. TEPCO has been taking the crane out in sections. Oil from the crane leaked into the pool as a section was removed. The cooling loop for the spent fuel pool has been temporarily shut off to prevent the oil from going into the cooling system. The current plan is to use oil absorbing mats on the pool then restart the cooling system after the oil is removed.
