New Fukushima Daiichi Robot Changes Approach
Yet another robot has been introduced for use at Fukushima Daiichi. This one is significantly different.
The unnamed six propeller drone has the capability to fly autonomously and can avoid obstacles using a laser guidance system. The new drone/bot can also change its own battery. Most of the robots currently in use at the plant require a communications tether and require a remote operator. The new drone is planned for use in mapping areas of the building. It has already done a test flight in unit 5. There was no mention of the drone’s ability to operate in high levels of radiation. The autonomous nature of this drone’s operation may be a viable work around for problems with radio controlled units and tethered units, both have had failure issues in the past. Read more here
