Fukushima Unit 1 Discharge Canal Has Record Contaminated Water Spike

Contamination levels rose again in the unit 1 discharge canal near the reactor building. Our records show this may have been the highest reading yet after a series of radiation spikes since early 2015.

The newest readings on September 2nd showed:

Cs-134  38,000 bq/liter

Cs-137  150,000 bq/liter

Beta β 160,000 bq/liter

What has changed recently is the operation of the frozen wall,, lowering of the water height in the unit 1 basement and pumping up of water out of the subdrain pits around the reactor buildings. Work recently concluded to concrete in the sea front trenches of units 1-3.  It is not clear if any of these had a specific impact on the discharge canal.
