Shouganai Hits Fukushima Daiichi
Shouganai has again hit Fukushima Daiichi. The notion that “it can’t be helped” was cited by NRA when confronted with yet another radioactive release to the ocean at the disaster site. The prefecture government demanded that NRA put limits on the radioactive contamination levels of rainwater being allowed to run out of the plant. NRA claimed that since there isn’t already a specific law to address that, they can do nothing.
Recent rainwater leaks from the plant were found to exceed the legal limits of contamination for planned water releases to the ocean. TEPCO’s solution is to try to divert runoff into the port rather than letting it flow directly into the sea. What TEPCO didn’t mention is that the port does still have water exchange with the sea as it has not been fully sealed off yet.
Apparently updating the existing laws to deal with the contaminated rainwater leaks would “take a lot of time” so the solution is to do nothing. Again.
