Fukushima Unit 3 Containment Probe On October 20th
TEPCO quietly announced that October 20th they would conduct the first containment inspection of unit 3. This is significant work as the building has been limited for entry due to damage and high radiation levels. Robotic decontamination has been under way in the building for more than a year.
TEPCO did not mention what the radiation levels would be near the work area. It appears they are using a rig similar to what has been used for units 1 and 2 for containment inspection work. A large metal isolation valve will be connected to the X-53 containment penetration above the control rod drive hatch and rail. A probe containing a temperature probe, radiation meter and a camera will be inserted into unit 3’s containment. This will be the first look inside unit 3’s containment since the initial disaster.
