Fukushima Documentary; 88 Hours Inside The Disaster

NHK_documentary_2016NHK is broadcasting a documentary throughout the week called 88 Hours – The Fukushima Nuclear Meltdown. It is based on the testimony and interviews with workers who were involved in the response at the plant during the first 88 hours as the meltdowns unfolded. The documentary views more like a disaster movie than a documentary yet captures the gravity of the disaster and the struggle to respond. The production relies heavily on CGI to fill the visual gaps of the events at the plant. It also managed to avoid much of the glossing over of the disaster that tends to happen and instead focuses on the inside events from the workers point of view.

The documentary will play in a live stream online on NHK’s website this week and should be available in most languages. It is also being rebroadcast on NHK’s satellite service, TV Japan and some PBS stations in the US. It may be available in other countries on their public broadcasting stations if they carry NHK content. The best way to find a scheduled time is to check with your local provider, then search for the documentary as various providers are playing it at different times.
