Interim Fukushima Contaminated Soil Storage Won’t Start Until 2020

20140805_SoilStorage_YomiuriShimbunYomiuri Shimbun is reporting that the effort to establish an interim soil storage site for the mountains of contaminated soil collected around Japan and in Fukushima Prefecture would not be able to open until 2020. The delay involves obtaining contract or sale of the land needed near the power plant disaster site. The bags used for soil storage have a useful life of about five years. This delay would mean all of those soil bag piled up around Japan would need to be transferred to another bag or over bagged now and possibly a second time before this facility would open.
