Japan’s Business Lobby Bails On Nuclear

solarfarmWe have tracked this issue since 2011, but this is an unexpected turn. Japan’s business lobby(Keidanren) has been loudly pushing nuclear power. Now Reuters is reporting that another influential business lobby, the Japan Association of Corporate Executives is pushing for changes to Japan’s energy policy. They want the government to shift to more renewables and away from nuclear power.

“We have a sense of crisis that Japan will become a laughing stock if we do not encourage renewable power,”

In our early reporting only companies like Suzuki and Softbank were actively taking stances against nuclear power and for renewables from a business standpoint. Suzuki saw nearby nuclear plants as a risk to their business stability after the Fukushima disaster. Softbank jumped into the solar farm business when new feed in  tariffs were introduced.

This new turn where businesses decide the old ways are outdated and hinder their ability to operate in an international playing field could be pivotal to Japan’s future energy policy. Japan’s new energy policy is due out next year. We will have a review of that new policy as soon as it publishes.
