Fukushima Daiichi To Cost Citizens Another $83 Billion

daiichiThe Japanese government plans to cover the costs of the Fukushima disaster including evacuee compensation and decommissioning of the plant site with a new public cost of $83 billion dollars. This includes a plan to make all electricity providers and consumers chip in to cover the costs of decommissioning other nuclear plants around Japan. This is not included in the $83 billion dollar estimate.

The plans require approvals of the Diet but clearly show the massive cost of the disaster and how the burden is always put on the public. Meanwhile, TEPCO has been turning a profit on paper and paying dividends to shareholders.
