Public To Shoulder Fukushima Decontamination Costs While Waste Piles Up

soilbagAs of early December 2016 there were more than 9 million radioactive waste bags piled up in Fukushima prefecture alone. This does not include large piles of these now degrading bags throughout Japan.

As waste has piled up so have the costs to deal with attempting to decontaminate the evacuation zones and contaminated areas far removed from Fukushima prefecture. The initial mandate was that TEPCO would eventually pay back the government for these costs. Now a new plan may absolve TEPCO of the responsibility and put the costs directly on taxpayers. Part of this would include an earmark for 30 million yen to decontaminate some of the most contaminated towns in the evacuation zone.

This is on top of new government plans to shift more of the decommissioning costs for Fukushima Daiichi to taxpayers via fees on electric bills.
