TEPCO Adds Low Tech Water Injection to Unit 3 Spent Fuel Pool

TEPCO published a handout covering the recent worker training for a rather low tech system to refill unit 3’s spent fuel pool. The pool currently has a pipe system used to top off the pool water as needed. This low tech method would be used if there was a larger problem on site that prevented the pipe system from operating.  With the new cover building they needed a way to put water into the pool.

The solution was a bin on the outside of the cover building and a pipe running to the pool. An on site concrete pumping truck previously used to inject water into the pools could be used to supply water. The parties responsible for fuel removal appear to be doing some level of contingency planning.
