Japan Govt. Erases Fukushima’s Victims

Optics are everything when you are trying to pretend a large scale disaster isn’t a large scale disaster.

Asahi Shimbun explains in deep detail how the Japanese government is quietly erasing Fukushima’s victims as part of their effort to promote “recovery”.

It started with lifting the mandatory evacuation orders for most of the towns near Fukushima Daiichi. Now the government is reclassifying large numbers of the evacuees as no longer evacuees without their knowledge. Anyone deemed without the “will” to return is no longer counted as an evacuee. How this “will” is determined is fuzzy. It does not include any consultation with the individual evacuees.

Those who have purchased a home outside their pre-disaster locale are no longer counted as evacuees. Those in public restoration housing or disaster public housing are no longer considered evacuees. These people may still want to return to their original homes but can’t due to multiple factors or consider doing so to be unsafe, even though they want to.

The image of reconstruction has loomed large, with the Olympics being a major tool of foisting the reconstruction idea on the public both in Japan and around the world.

“This is an act to socially hide the real number of evacuees, which could lead to a cover-up of the seriousness of the incident,” said Akira Imai, chief researcher of the Japan Research Institute for Local Government
