Researchers developed a 3D imaging system that could be used to located Fukushima’s melted nuclear fuel for under $150 using off the shelf parts.
Researchers in the UK and Japan developed the imaging system using the AVEXIS ROV as the mobile platform. A group of sensors were mounted to the AVEXIS then paired with cameras to provide location information. This allows the system to determine where the image was taken to later put them all together to create the 3D images.
The system was tested at the JAEA Naraha testing facility in Fukushima prefecture. This center includes a number of mock up facilities that model parts of the reactor systems at Fukushima Daiichi. The test run in the containment tank at Naraha was considered successful. Mock debris was mapped with sufficient accuracy that the system could conceivably be used at Daiichi.
No formal plan to use this new system has been announced so far.
