Fukushima Spent Fuel Update 10.2019
Spent fuel at Fukushima Daiichi has made some slow progress as storage space is strained.
4.9% of the spent fuel in the unit 3 spent fuel pool has been removed to the common pool.
The common pool is at 90.2% full. The common pool has a capacity of 6799 assemblies. There are currently 666 open slots. Unit 3’s remaining spent fuel in need of transfer is 538 assemblies.
Cask storage on the hill is 69.4% full. A few years ago there were problems obtaining storage casks. This may have delayed moving more fuel to dry cask storage.
In an ideal world, this would all be moving at a faster pace. Reality creates plenty of complexities on top of constraints caused by multiple efforts taking place at the disaster site.
