Taishan Nuclear Reactor Shuts Down Over Fuel Damage
The BBC is reporting that the Taishan unit 1 reactor has shut down over the long evolving fuel damage problem. The Chinese plant operator stated the shut down came after talks with “technicians”. The stated plan is to eventually open the reactor and replace damaged fuel rods. If the damage is more severe than hoped, this may require more than replacing fuel rods to restart the unit.
Taishan unit 1 is the first operating EPR reactor in the world, designed by French EDF. The construction of this new reactor design has faced problems and delays at various build sites around the world.
