Fukushima Unit 1 New Cover Building Progress
Work towards installing a new cover building on unit 1 at Fukushima Daiichi is under way. A recent report from TEPCO showed the plan and the current status.
A web cam shot captured on 9.28.21 Japan time, shows unit 1 with the temporary cover building and trussing removed.
TEPCO claimed that work to install anchors for the new building would start in late August.
A remote rig will be used to install the anchors that will be drilled into the side of the existing unit 1 reactor building.
The cover building itself is being assembled in an off site work yard. TEPCO did not describe how
the assembled unit would be moved and installed on unit 1. This installation project will take until
the end of 2023 into 2024 to complete.
Part of the new cover building will include a filtered ventilation system similar to the ones installed on units 3 and 4
for spent fuel removal at those units. This system will filter the air exhaust to remove radioactive particles and would
create a negative air pressure to prevent particles from leaking out. The design for this system includes and emergency
water injection component. In case of a natural disaster knocking out the normal water injection system for the spent fuel pool,
this route could be used to pump water into the spent fuel pool.
