Russia Bombs Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Plant

Russia has attacked the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. Both Energoatom and the IAEA are reporting this incident.

What we know so far:

  • None of the critical for nuclear safety and security were destroyed
  • The plant is still operating on diesel backup generators
  • At least 12 missiles hit the plant
  • Overpasses for for staff were damaged
  • Chemical desalinated water storage tanks were damaged
  • The steam generator purge system was damaged
  • Auxiliary systems of one of the two general station diesels were damaged
  • Other equipment of the station infrastructure was damaged
  • Three hits were also recorded in the area of ​​the Rainbow substation


IAEA inspectors said they could see the blasts from their office windows at the plant. The agency issued a number of frustrated statements about the ongoing situation at the plant after the attack.

The apparent motivation by Russia was to prevent Ukrainian staff from restarting reactors 5 and 6 at low power to provide steam to the boiler heat system that provides heat to the nearby town.
