Radioactive Mushrooms In Chiba, Rice In Iitate-Mura

Mushrooms with 1955 bq/kg were found in Chiba. The mushrooms were grown from cultivation taken before the nuclear disaster.

In Iitate-mura researchers grew rice that showed the following cesium 137 contamination:

  • From the rice grains: 2,600 becquerels/kg
  • From the straw: 2,200 becquerels/kg
  • From the roots: 1,500 becquerels/kg
  • Soil contamination: 50,000 becquerels/kg

The rice grains were the highest part of the plant. This raises concerns about the early reports that rice from Fukushima is all safe since other areas had higher radiation readings.
