Suzuki May Move Factory Away From Nuke Plants, Cities Call For Shutdown Of Hamaoka

Suzuki has told local mayors near the Hamaoka nuclear power plant that they are considering moving their facility due to the risk from nuclear power in the area unless Hamaoka is shut down or safety assured.

Chubu Electric signed a pact with the four nearby cities that it would assure plant safety and obtain the approval of the cities to continue operating the plant. This is the first large business to make such an announcement that they consider operating next to a nuclear plant too large of a business risk. Power companies in Japan have cited the electricity needs of large companies and their impact on the economy has a major reason for nuclear power. If companies begin to see nuclear power as a substantial business risk it could be a major hit to the nuclear industry in Japan.

The city of Makinohara has asked for the permanent closure of Hamaoka unless its safety can be fully guaranteed.
