Cars, Nukes And Dueling Cities
The two cities near the Hamaoka nuclear plant can’t agree on allowing the reactors to restart. The mayor of Omaezak wants the plant to restart, his city gets 40% of their revenue from Hamaoka. The mayor of Makinohara is against the restarts. Their city includes a large Suzuki automotive plant. If Hamaoka restarts Suzuki may move their plant somewhere else. They see the nearby nuclear plant as too high risk for the ongoing business safety of their operation. If Suzuki moves their automotive plant Makinohara will lose a large number of jobs and revenue. A number of other cities in the area have spoken out against restarting Hamaoka.
This seems to be a common tactic (or problem) where a nuclear power company gives so much in subsidy or revenue to an area that they become beholden to the nuclear company.
