Highly Radioactive Cedar Pollen From Fukushima Poses Risk To Other Areas
The Ministry of Education conducted radiation testing of cedar trees in various regions to get an idea what the traveling cedar pollen might carry with it. They found extremely high levels in trees around Fukushima. Based on findings of contamination in cedar trees in some parts of Fukushima the pollen could have around 50,000 bq/kg of cesium in it. If this pollen gets carried by strong winds it could travel far enough to reach Tokyo. The government claimed there was no real risk with this, that appears to be a considerable downplaying of the situation.
People would be wise to watch the weather patterns and take appropriate action if the cedar pollen from Fukushima appears to be heading their way. We previously compiled some tips on protecting yourself from fallout and contamination. The basics being good hygiene at home to keep dust and pollen out. Investing in a good HEPA filter for your heating or air conditioning system would be a good idea. If your home doesn’t have a system that uses a filter like that a stand alone HEPA filter air cleaner can help lower in home levels.
