Fukushima Daiichi Radiation Readings 2021

TEPCO released a small set of radiation readings in May 2021.

The new readings give some insight into the persistence of contamination on site and how transferring radioactive material has changed the radiation risk over the years. The map below shows concentrations of gamma radiation on site. The readings are in microsieverts with a maximum of 1000 uSv/hr. This may not accurately reflect the high levels near the reactor buildings that are likely much higher based on other surveys in prior years.

Radiation readings on roads on site. Most are fairly low, with higher readings near the reactor buildings. The low measurement maximum may not reflect the actual high levels.

Radiation readings for waste and water tank areas. The bulk of the radiation from these sources at the site boundary is due to “skyshine” or direct gamma radiation beams. This only looks at potential radiation exposure at the site boundary, this does not include the measurements of actual radioactive materials within the tanks and waste storage.
