Genkai Nuclear Plant Has Another Incident
This time it is unit 3 leaking 1.8 tons of water out of a failing pump. Unit 4 was previously shut down and then restarted after an issue with the steam condenser. Kyushu claims none of the water leaked out into the environment yet it points out the ongoing safety issues at nuclear plants in Japan. Typically the issues are at the older plants due to widespread aging problems that cause equipment and pipes to fail. Units 3 and 4 at Genkai were built in the 1990’s and are quite new by nuclear power standards yet have a string of failure issues.
The local governor complained about the lack of honesty out of Kyushu. The same power company that recently was under investigation for fraudulent actions related to public approvals for their nuclear plants.
