Giant Washing Machines And Monkey Radiation Technicians
These are some of the ideas people are experimenting with in Japan to try to deal with the the radiation contamination.
The giant washing machine is an idea to see if they could lower the contamination level on disaster rubble before it is disposed. The project teamed up Toda Corp. and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency to see if this will work. Detergents and wire brushes in large drums will be used to try to remove contamination. If the initial experiments are successful they would scale up the technology.
Fukushima University researchers are planning to put tiny radiation detectors with GPS units on wild monkeys. The project will also help determine the radiation exposures of the local wildlife. The collars can be removed by remote control so researchers can go retrieve them and find them via GPS. There is a known troop near Minamisoma living in an area of high radiation that may be used as part of the project.
