A Few People Defy Evacuation Order, Live In The Zone

According to Mainichi, 11 people are defying the evacuation order and still living in the evacuation zone. Most are elderly and are staying with others too weak to make the move.

Then there is Naoto Matsumura. He recently built a new home near Tomioka and decided not to leave. He has been caring for unoccupied homes, feeding animals left behind and has been a link between the area and those who had to leave. He no longer has electricity or running water. The article at Japan Sub Culture details Matsumura’s survival tactics to live without a community, most utilities and surrounded by radiation. He has taken some steps to lower his exposure but does not spend his days in a mask and radiation suit.

Matsumura has been a life line to many animals in the zone, saving two dogs from boar traps that ended up losing a leg. He has also proven to be a set of eyes for what the government and TEPCO are doing in the zone. He found out about the government plan to poison cattle by injecting them with disinfectant, a slow tortured death. Word spread through animal rescue groups in Japan and the plan was eventually called off.

He is in his 50’s and says he realizes his exposure will shorten his life but has decided to accept that risk and stay behind.
